![]() Etobicoke Historical Society: A New History of the Old Mill

Richard Jordan has always loved to write and speak about local history and his many travels. For seven years, Richard contributed a local history column called Heritage to the Toronto Star. His feature articles on a variety of topics have appeared in the Saturday Star and Sunday Star, as well as international history and genealogy magazines such as Family Chronicle and Internet Genealogy. He co-hosted documentaries on Cable 10 in Etobicoke and has produced videos on a variety of subjects. His family history book, Beyond the Great Pine Ridge, was published in 2004 and his most recent book, Ernest D. Banting and Life in Weston 1921-1973, was published in 2022. An exciting and entertaining speaker, Richard is a graduate of the Toastmasters program. He has made hundreds of presentations to numerous historical and genealogical societies as well as seniors groups from Oakville to Peterborough. Richard grew up in North York and studied Geography and Environmental Studies at York University. He worked in the land survey business and at the City of Mississauga, where he was a Geographic Information Systems Specialist. Now retired, he is able to travel the world and has added talks about his time touring Iceland, China, Ireland and the Netherlands as well as walking the Nakasendo Trail in Japan and along the full length of Hadrian’s Wall in England. |

Earth Day is also the 3rd annual Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup! Our club will be joining Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike across communities bordering the Great Lakes in Canada and the United States to participate in cleaning up refuse within the Great Lakes basin. We will be meeting in the Rotary Peace Park at 25 11th Street on Saturday April 22nd from 12-2pm. All needed supplies as well as light refreshments will be provided after the cleanup for a brief social. Please signup with Friends, Family, and Neighbours to partake in this Hands-On event. All are welcome to join in as we have lots of ground to cover (students in need of volunteer hours are especially welcome). |

![]() The Omega Project: Combating Sex-Trafficking

At the age of 17, an acquaintance of mine was sold into sex trafficking by her boyfriend, and no one knew until she escaped four years later through the help of a local anti-trafficking organization. Shortly after learning about my friend, a headline exposing a local restaurant and mansion owner for sexual assault charges stole the front page of our city’s news, sending shock and helplessness throughout our city. Even though I was fortunate to grow up in a safe and inclusive community, I was extremely ill-prepared to face the threats of grooming. It was then that I first realized the magnitude of this issue and noted the lack of resources that were available to the public.
The world has changed so fast through the rise of technology, that the foundations of interpersonal communication have shifted – impacting how relationships of various kinds are developed and maintained on a global scale. Through this shift, national education systems have failed to properly pivot and address these changes. This means that teachers, parents, guardians, and communities are unable to properly educate our youth against the predatory acts of others (families and strangers alike). Because of this, trafficking has risen 317% in the past 12 years. I believe that education is the first step to not only slowing this rise but also preventing future cases. Education is also essential in restoring whole communities that are a target by the criminal organization for their complacency. While participating in the 2022 Miss World Canada pageant, I decided to stand for our communities and provide the public with easy and accessible educational resources on this topic through the creation of The Omega Project. |

The CCSJ Food Pantry serves, on average, over 300 clients per month; more than a third of these are children. Volunteers make it possible to open three times per month. An agency of the Daily Bread Food Bank, they have seen increased demand for their services and their volunteers are feeling it. So, we as Rotarians are going to lend a hand and volunteer as a group to cover some shifts at the Food Pantry’s on Saturday May 13th. Carla has many years of work experience and she combines her Bachelor of Social Work, current studies for an MBA (specializing in Management and Leadership), intersectional feminist lens, anti-racist/anti-oppressive, trauma-informed and harm reduction principles, make in this new role. Carla came to Women’s Habitat with over two decades of sector experience and quickly became an asset to the agency. She has up-levelled service delivery, led the creation of innovative approaches and new programming, as the Manager of Community Programs at Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke, where she managed Counseling Services, Housing and Transitional Supports Services, Parenting programs, Girls-focused programs and Life Skills Drop-in programs. Prior to coming to Women’s Habitat, Carla managed the YWCA Toronto Women’s Shelter and Transitional Housing and Support Program for over 10 years. Carla believes that service delivery must support capacity, resiliency building and sustainability for the women and their dependents seeking services as well as be in alignment with strategies to end gender-based violence. Under Carla’s leadership, the Women’s Habitat Outreach Centre enhanced and delivered programs that focus on skill building and housing readiness as well as prevention-focused programing for boys and young men. Carla is a transformational leader with effective problem-solving abilities and a mentor with the ability to build strong and creative teams by fostering a culture of collaboration, diversity and inclusion. Carla is a strategic and caring leader, who is well loved by her staff, and respected for her ability to make good decisions that balance our organizational goals with the needs of our people. She has also been instrumental in landing our ARAO and inclusion policies. Carla has demonstrated the ability to rebuild a strong organizational culture that values equity, and which will help Women’s Habitat attract and retain the talent it needs to take the organization to the next level. Over the years Carla has established strong sector network relationships, which has unequivocally raised the organization’s profile externally. |
